I think a number of those complaints are solved with certain distros and the rippling effects of the work that went into SteamOS. Even though I am familiar with it, I believe that SMB in Linux is still better than Windows. And even then, most users aren't going to do that.

I do think this year is the year of the Linux desktop because this is the year of adoption/true kickoff. We have a few distros now that are genuinely compelling and there is a move in the gaming space towards these distros. Gamers are the hardest to please group too.

It's only been finally this year that I've found Linux to be compelling enough to try for my main desktop again. I used fedora on my 2015 MBP and it's really, really nice to use. And I hate to say it, but I think LLMs are going to help adoption.

Not to mention: Linux specific things like setting up SMB/NFS can be solved with scripts, software, or distros solving the user experience of that. There are a few leading distros that have improved UX significantly, and that's why I'm hopeful.

And I can absolutely imagine that as Linux gains more traction, Windows is going to try very hard to force consumers into using it. I can imagine efforts to prevent software from working on Linux or new hardware like laptops being physically restricted from installing other operating systems.
