An interesting read, perhaps sobering for those who haven't been through the annual "This is the year of linux on the desktop" cycle. I have been gaming primarily with linux since 2012, when it was much much less accessible. Only in the last 5 years has the experience reached a par with win7.

While I think the gaming section is a little behind where we're at now, it ain't by much. Mesa is a fine driver if you have, like me, shit-tier hardware. It's quite another story if you want to use the latest features of a top-tier card.

I think a number of those complaints are solved with certain distros and the rippling effects of the work that went into SteamOS. Even though I am familiar with it, I believe that SMB in Linux is still better than Windows. And even then, most users aren't going to do that.

I do think this year is the year of the Linux desktop because this is the year of adoption/true kickoff. We have a few distros now that are genuinely compelling and there is a move in the gaming space towards these distros. Gamers are the hardest to please group too.

It's only been finally this year that I've found Linux to be compelling enough to try for my main desktop again. I used fedora on my 2015 MBP and it's really, really nice to use. And I hate to say it, but I think LLMs are going to help adoption.

Not to mention: Linux specific things like setting up SMB/NFS can be solved with scripts, software, or distros solving the user experience of that. There are a few leading distros that have improved UX significantly, and that's why I'm hopeful.

i switched from w10 to kubuntu when the end news dropped and i never looked back - all my peripherals are plug and play even my custom leverless fgc controller - task manager has all that - can play all my steam library, PoE2 and even pirated exe games i truly believe the average pc user can do it

I think it’s more likely the "year of the linux desktop" will be whenever windows gets worse than linux for desktop usage rather than when linux gets better than windows. Windows is getting worse faster than linux is getting better

My Steam Deck is a life boat when Win10 gets worse and BDS. My main issue is YouTube, the AV1 Codec glitches the longer a video is playing. Tried to disable the Codec in Vivaldi, so YT uses an older Codec, but the glitch remains, just delayed.

Artem's article is great tbh, as a (former) Linux user. I've had so much frustration and stress with Linux (exacerbated by ADHD rip) that I'm back on Windows. Windows 11 might be annoying in other ways but at least it stops me overthinking. I've bought a Mac now and I'm gonna play around with that.

I have been messing around with Linux for my server because so many people said it is "ready for mainstream use now". It so isn't. As you say so many things, often basic things, still require the command line.

Plus online help articles often are not at all well explained and tend to assume multiple layers of prior understanding to follow. On the flip side some times there is a way to do it in the GUI, but most "how to do this" articles don't online mention it.

I'm not looking forward to upgrading from Win10 ESU to a linux distro, but that's the path. Win11 is not something I want. Reading tutorials and executing sudo commands for basic functionality and a shit filesharing environment aren't something I want either, but at this point it's preferable.
