It is a shame this heavily Washington-influenced Politico hit job doesn't mention the *reason* Sanchez opposes the spending He's the only 🇪🇺leader calling out Trump's extortion for what it is, and calling for independent European defence Obviously the 🇺🇸military-industrial complex doesn't like that

When European leaders meet to discuss deeper defense cooperation next week, Spanish PM Pedro Sánchez will be expected to fall in line and contribute more to the effort to support Ukraine. If he doesn’t, he’ll face a showdown with his counterparts. 🔗 www.politico.eu/article/spai...

Macron isn't calling out the extortion, he's quietly accepting it for now. His domestic political problems have majorly crippled him in Brussels. He doesn't have the political capital to lead a resistance so he's keeping his head down for the moment.

It is not wrong for Sanchez to say he's not going to make military pledges under the existing extortion racket where money will flow across the Atlantic to Trump. He's saying there needs to be a framework for sovereign independent European command of new spending. And there isn't one.

Two things can be true at once. The extortionate 🇺🇸weapons-buying plans other countries are agreeing to can be both good for Ukraine and bad for the EU. Sanchez is calling for a solution that is good for both. For that he's being vilified.

That quote was taken out of context, also by the the 🇺🇸publication above. It's a literal fact the Russia isn't going to cross the Pyrenees, but Sanchez wasn't saying that means they don't need to invest in 🇪🇺defence. In fact 🇪🇸 just mobilised €6.9bn for its *own* weapons company Indra.
