Things we need to teach in school in California: what a Council-Manager form of government is. In this structure the mayor is the chairperson of the city council. No more, no less. I often see people ascribe powers and responsibilities to mayors of California cities that they don't actually have.

[The exceptions are the mayors of LA, San Diego, San Francisco, Fresno, and Oakland. Those cities have Mayor-Council governments. Their mayors are actually the chief executives of their cities and have the role most people conceptualize a mayor as having.]
