I'm watching Alien (rewatching obviously) Why do spaceships even have self destruct systems in scifi stories? Not "jury rig the ship to explode", a system designed to blow up the ship. I mean, what's the reasoning behind that? Who thought that was needed or even a not-batshit-insane idea? smh

The same reason spaceships in real life have self-destructs (though we call them "flight termination systems")

Those are typically in unmanned craft tho right? I can see the training did such a system in a rocket or missile. Are they common or even used in manned vehicles?

Any manned craft can become unmanned
