I appear to have gotten this at least partially wrong. With that said the lack of any kind of announcement by SpaceX or triumphant tweeting by Musk makes me wonder if, having sent a message, they're now about to claim it was a technical glitch or all in the Ukrainians' heads.

I did not have "a big boy did it and ran away" on my list of possible excuses. This is a fantastic line because it is simultaneously very difficult to believe (Musk is famously a control freak regarding use of his software) and does nothing to soothe foreign clients worried about US control.

Musk already took it on himself to cut out Ukraine’s service when they were planning an attack on Crimea. He’s made himself the sole arbiter of who gets a tactical advantage in any battle.
