If the UK and France can't or won't hold the line against a Victor Orban Secretary-General bid, they should give up their Permanent Seats on the Security Council. No shame in no longer being globally relevant, but if it really has gotten that bad it would be humiliating to keep pretending.

I'd have a bit more time for this MattyY take if I wasn't 99% sure that had the result gone the other way he be all over Twitter smugly claiming there are important lessons for leftists to learn from Lula's failure (be more conservative, do not fight for anything ever).

ghost malone ergo propter bones@proptermalone.bsky.social

I think this is broadly correct but it’s a symptom not a cause- the reason I’m deeply invested in the democratic choices of e.g. Brazil is that there’s a really big difference between Lula and Bolsonaro! a characteristic of democracy is that it allows for very frequent big direction changes

"Suicidal provocation of Russia while our armed forces are at their most woeful state since WW2". Mate, the Russian army is currently pulling T-55's out of storage and losing ~1,800 men a day in foot and motorcycle assaults that achieve nothing. This is "poke the bear" nonsense.

dmitryopines.substack.com‘Poking the Bear’: From Putin to TommoRejecting the world’s dumbest idiom.
David Higham@oldtrotter.bsky.social

Well you can't get much clearer than that. Restore are Putin stooges.

This is a country spending 40% of its budget on defense and losing to Ukraine. You think they're going to launch a naval invasion of Dover? They lost their Black Sea flagship to Ukraine, which basically does not have a navy. What are you talking about?!

"Oh, but they have nuclear weapons!" First, so do you. Second, if that's your approach than what does it matter what state the UK military is in? Third, does having nukes entitle them to run UK foreign policy now? Where does it end?

Here's an idea for editors, let's do a little roleplay. Writer: "I have a contrarian take!" Editor: "Is it fucking stupid?" Writer: "Well yes, but it bucks the consensus. No one else is saying it." Editor: "Is that because the consensus is correct?" Writer: "... yes but... " <hang up>

I don't know what's going to happen in this Brazilian election, but imagine watching these early results as one of those Mayors that shut down bus service to screw with Lula's voters.

I mean, yay obviously! ... but it IS insane that a week into this story we still don't have anything resembling a definitive explanation of who restricted it, why, and on whose authority. Like admit it, you wouldn't be entirely surprised if tomorrow the NYT revealed it was a rogue Claude bot.

Starlink and Starshield operations have been restored to the speeds Ukraine had before the restrictions. - Zelenskyy

If I were emperor of the universe any candidate promising to balance the budget or fund expensive programs by "cutting inefficiency, waste and fraud in government" would be immediately slimed like a Nickelodean host.

Hey everyone, gather around! Elon Musk, the trillionaire defense contractor currently spending >$400m on political campaigns to prop up the party of a deeply unpopular president who launched the Iran War has some thoughts about Ukraine, elites, and money in politics.

While we're on this fucking subject, who know where there's a GIAAAAAAAAAANT gap between "the elites making millions" and "the common people dying in the trenches". Russia! There's exactly one elite who wants this war. One. Even the oligarchs over there hate it. Why not yell at him a bit?

I started a thread debunking these claims with links to Kiel, programs monitoring Ukraine aid money, the fact the US cut off funding once Trump was in, data showing most of what the US gave was military aid and you can't buy TV ads in Ohio with a Howitzer... ... but fuck it. It's late. I'm tired.

When pushed on this, he's going to link to some Breitbart article or ask Grok to dig through the campaign financing records until he finds some 74 year old Ukrainian-American dual national who gave $500 to the Democratic candidate (his nephew) in a local state house race in Ohio and yell "SEE!!!!!"

GOP wasting an absolute godsent liferaft of an opportunity to lose by 14 points nationwide and then all, from the President down to the lowelist intern, from Alaska to Texas, blame it entirely on Vivek Ramaswamy.

The US government is now asking Elon Musk to restore the access they say was never removed, Elon says was shut down by the US government, and both briefly tried to pretend was down due to a technical glitch, in between darkly hinting Ukrainians deserve to die for being stubborn or ungrateful.

I don't know what the sadder explanation here would be. That he's so used to Trump's "never apologise, always double down playbook" that he does it even when he knows it's a bad idea. Or that he's so marinated in the Twitter mind-melt he can't even recognise things that cross the line anymore.

Written four years ago. Do you know why few imagined US troops would get directly involved or that Russia would use nuclear weapons, John? Because it was blindingly obvious neither of those things would happen.

Not the main point here obviously, but I'm fairly certain the Titanic was actually reasonably easy to turn around overnight right up until it hit the iceberg, at which point turning it ceased to be helpful or relevant.

JD Vance on the economy: "You don't turn the Titanic around overnight"

All that said, credit where credit is due: Standing at the helm of a sinking Titanic impotently spinning its wheel left and right while petulantly whining at the panicking crew for not saluting you is a perfect metaphor for the Trump administration's current Iran policy.

A non-negligible part of the right's political success rests on the insight that something being "annoying" is a far more motivating factor for certain voters than any objective analysis of its actual impact on them would suggest it should be.

Absolutely lmao. "Small stuff messaged well doesn't matter," I dismissively declare as I watch Mamdani carried through the streets of New York as Eternal God-Emperor every time he does a TikTok live about fixing a pothole.

People who complain that Burnham is "wasting his time" on things that are very easy and low-cost for the government but make a significant difference to people's everyday lives don't understand politics imo. If this was all he was thinking about as prime minister, sure, I would worry, but it's not

I did not think I had it in me to get angrier. I was wrong.

The riots are about education & the cost of living. Reducing immigration will not solve those embedded problems & restore “fraternity”. What is it with Phillips’ obsession about (implicitly Muslim) immigration? French riots show Andy Burnham his top priority www.thetimes.com/article/6610...

"The stirring of dread Cthulhu from slumber has unleased a tide of abyssal horrors, writhing in a danse macabre across Albion, twisting to madness the minds of all who gaze upon them. This should serve as a wake-up call to the government on how communities all over Britain feel when seeing ..."

The Lindsey Graham Act would have imposed significant new sanctions on Russia from 18 October, but allowed the President to issue waivers. He just did. To avoid screaming, I went through every provision explaining them and indicating which he waived. Spoiler: All the ones that did anything.

I know it's fashionable to be hyper cynical about American voters, but I genuinely do not believe many will accept Trump's new narrative that all the problems in their lives flow from Kyiv.

They know this is beyond the pale otherwise they'd be bragging about it on Twitter and Fox & Friends.

I appear to have gotten this at least partially wrong. With that said the lack of any kind of announcement by SpaceX or triumphant tweeting by Musk makes me wonder if, having sent a message, they're now about to claim it was a technical glitch or all in the Ukrainians' heads.
