I spent more time on this piece than almost anything else I've written in the last year. Building a better, more decentralized internet is an inherent necessity if you want a functioning democracy. I hope people find it a useful encapsulation of where we're at. www.liberalism.org/p/enshittifi...

liberalism.orgEnshittification, Despotification, and the Open InternetIt’s not about whether technology is inherently good or bad, liberating or oppressive. Architecture shapes incentives; incentives shape outcomes.

I think Bluesky's cultural problems kinda highlight its limitations; most people like the "defaults" provided by centralization, and complain instead of migrating when there's a conflict between their preferences and whatever service provider they are using.

I'm kicking around the idea that AI could actually help a lot with this - among a lot of other things the AI tools are already at or near a point where they could provide a good "algorithm" matching your preferences replacing the discover feed, to use the bluesky example.

I have ideas about that too, which in large part involves smarter clients and more efficient indexes so it's practical. Stuff like more practical "multi homing", and there's already some partial view + backfill appviews which can do much of this as a kind of censorship resistance technique
