it's mindblowing how responsive a 1996 laptop is running period-correct software on an SSD (CompactFlash->IDE adapter)

@digifox.binaryden.net

like, do I actually want to daily drive Windows 95? Fuck no, for several reasons. Do I think we've lost something with so many abstraction layers? Yeah, kinda.

Period-correct software is also Haiku, though! Or Motif

Doesn't look like Haiku is viable unfortunately. 384 MB of RAM minimum.

(The machine I'm poking at has 40 MB of RAM)

That's the minimum? Yikes. BeOS 4.5 then? discuss.haiku-os.org/t/beos-haiku...

discuss.haiku-os.orgBeOS/Haiku historic timeline of OS's RAM use?Is there an overview somewhere of which version of BeOS and HaikuOS uses how much RAM?

That looks like an option, as well as AROS. I'll try BeOS 4.5 and report back.
