I can think of a model that lets them make money, if you build an appview for the protocol and monetize it, you give a % revenue back to atproto's development mandatorily, just 5% would be enough. Also, I don't mind, if they show in the near future show ads. I don't understand the gripe...

...of people hating ads? How would businesses sell you their products? There is a tasteful way to do it(think pre 2018-19 YouTube, or like FB but less number of ads), if they stuff it in my face, now that's problematic.
