We're in a very interesting transition phase between software development with a 'prod' and personal software. I had an interesting chat with Illia Polosukhin during the Buidl Europe speakers' dinner last year. His take is that most software will be ephemeral and IMO that is directionally correct

I personally believed then (and still now) that society needs at least one middle step where humans still have a hand on the wheel and an interface to interact with. A year ago people still had strong doubts about whether or not LLMs could produce 'production ready' code.

I predicted we would have self-sovereign interfaces at Buidl Europe and we are CLOSE. bsky.app/profile/dist... bsky.app/profile/dist... bsky.app/profile/dana... bsky.app/profile/dist...

Self-sovereign Fluid Interfaces are a certainty. Why have paginated Kindle when the modern desired affordance is scrolling? Why settle for a Bluesky without drafts? When users can collaborate with their agents to achieve the UX they want, internal design will disappear, only data feeds remain

So what happens when people can build their own software AND define their interface? What I said then and said now remains. The value then shifts from the developed experience to high quality data feeds. Right now people are hand-wringing about LLM-generated 'production' code. It's too late.

For the moment we still need to deal with concepts like CI/CD, issues, and trying to coordinate human effort with linters, style guides, and code reviews. If a year ago nobody was taking LLM output seriously, where do you think we'll be 1 year from now?

You can still have hand-crafted artisanal software, and it will be VERY valuable, but it won't be the majority of software made and the concept of a small group of people dictating the user experience of a mass of people is under question today. What we will also have is personal software, 1 of 1.

And if you think it's going to only be possible due to a handful of vendors as a kind of cloud2.0, you should see the latest on Qwen3.6 and Deepseek4.0. It's hitting Claude level outputs, locally, which means you stay in control. We're getting more freedom and that is a very very good thing.
