Ok socialist pals, I've seen this a couple times tonight so I'm speaking up: we gotta stop saying "liberals are capitalists so they'll inevitably side with the fascists". Maybe this was true in Marx's time, I dunno, but it just ain't true today and it does us all a disservice to believe it.

[1/3] Read your thread and I, mostly, agree. I think capitalism and capitalists, in theory and at times in practice, prefer a stable market environment provided by democratic liberalism. This is particularly true of your regular, everyday capitalist (moms and pops, urban and suburban citizen, etc.)

[2/3] At the same time, and this is something we’ve seen in the US, market players (i.e. capitalists of all stripes: financiers, venture capitalists, university administrators) are overly focused on short-term gains.

First, if you talk to your average liberal, they fucking hate Trump and are explicit that he is a fascist and that's what they don't like. A lot of them are also lukewarm at best about capitalism tbh, but even if they love capitalism, no, mostly they are not siding with Trump and Elon over us.

But it's also a misapprehension of capitalism and fascism. Capitalists want the economy to be capitalist because they think it's more efficient and produces better outcomes. I think they're wrong, but that's an economics debate you can have. Fascism, though, is about *power*.

How about β€œWe need all Americans to elect diverse Democrats to defeat Trump Fascism- (for massive reforms & investigations & impeachment & convictions) thereby restoring the Constitution & basic economic principles. THEN launch the New Deal II to stop record fraud & inequality. All hands on deck!

I think this type of critique of Liberals would probably only apply to THE mega rich capitalists while plenty of the regular ol Liberals are much more reliable. Trust Bill Gates? Ehhhhhh Trust Johnny Joe that felt Haley Stevens was best for Michigan? Probably still going to vote against Fascism.

Exactly. It's kind of shocking that this gets overlooked but average liberals have a shared *class interest* with socialists when it comes to fighting fascism - or to look through a power lens, libs and socialists are both out-groups under fascism and so share interests that way.
