Using Switch 2 Game-Key Cards is pure business for some publishers. From a game preservation view, these things should never exist. People defending it with "you can resell them" is more than worrying to us. People even claiming we would be ok with empty cards is baffling.
I wouldn't "defend" it as you can resell it, more say that it's a silver lining on a crap situation. At the very least, you still own it. Obviously, that's not an ideal situation but it is still a reason why buying physical is better than buying digital, even when it's a crap option.
Not from a preservation perspective, but from an ownership perspective.
With digital, I am forced to buy it directly from the first party storefront, likely for full price. With physical, I can buy it on an open market with much more price competition and buy it used, or sell it myself.
Temporary ownership is still ownership. For most people, this will mean being able to buy from multiple markets, sell games, buy used, find better deals than the digital store, etc, likely for at least a decade.
That is absolutely still better than buying digital even tho not everything we want.
Anyway, like I said at the start I'm not defending the existence of these things. They shouldn't exist. Unfortunately, they do. So because they do, I'm just looking at one aspect where they're still better than a digital purchase. Hopefully most studios use a full game card instead.
