Sony ends physical production in 2028. The bomb we hoped they were smart enough to never trigger. Discoverability, dead. Ownership, dead. Legal preservation, dead. Micro publishers, dead. A billion $ market, and they just throw it away.

bsky.app/profile/rain... ...Or they could just take away physical altogether. *Wonderful.* Why does this horrid decision not surprise me? The sooner we start striving to make it illegal for companies to sell mere "licenses" to media, the better; we all know that's why they're doing this: Control.

Like, seriously, everyone always focuses on the digital aspect of this, but do you really think it's going to *stop* at digital? Eventually companies are going to find a way to make physical games just a "license" too. We need to stop this at the source, which means we need to own our digital media.

Now I imagine those who will comment on this with: it's better this way, since on the BD there is only a game key to download the game and that's it. (Bad times 😢)

That would be the best response to all of this. They're just asking for it at this point. No amount of their loyal console fan warriors are gonna stop how badly it'll backfire on them if/when that happens.

It's very clear from the comments that they did NOT read the room. I hope people fight HARD against this. Take it to the lawmakers. Take it to antitrust lawyers as well. This is completely killing off competition for game pricing and availability. It's killing off stores like GameStop.

At least consumers with common sense can take comfort in knowing they'll never have to buy a console newer than the PS4 generation moving forward. Granted, that excludes the average gamer and reply guy, but still.

I really hope that DELTARUNE will get fully released before the deadline! Thankfully it will still get a physical release on Switch 1 & 2 for sure, but I would really like it to be available on an optical medium as well, since we are starting to see NAND flash-based things like 3DS game cards fail.

I think it is safe to say that we are all absolutely devastated by this. Sony is now certainly trying its best to shut down Blu-ray production entirely, so that films and music (admittedly most of the latter is on CD and even vinyl, but multi-channel music is only really on BD-A) will be gone too.
