Now that Sony told you they will kill discs in less than two years, how long do you think they will keep that disc drive authentication we warned everyone about running? System reset? Swapping parts? That thing becoming a brick is now closer than ever!

Really wish i could easily find another new original PS5 model, i hope the one i have lasts decades. Been thinking about picking the disc drive for a future slim or even Pro model, but I was thinking they might make those obsolete someday.

At this point I wouldn't rule out them turning everyone's drive off remotely next week out of pure spite. Sony's C-suite is actually evil.

If they do brick it, that will help a bit more to open the eyes of the public. And I hope it won't go well with Europe's Parlement. On the other hand, that disc drive, the PS5/Pro, the PS4/Pro and many other consoles, are gonna have a wonderful time in the hacking community in the years to come 😘

Everything except the fat disc console is at risk of becoming the PSP Go. Though all the models already have planned obsolescence due to the soldered SSD. bsky.app/profile/bigo...

Something to think about, in 2009 Sony released the PSP Go, a digital-only console. Years ago the PlayStation Store for PSP closed. The only way to buy games for the PSP Go now is through the PS3 or PS Vita, then using the downloads list. This method goes away after July 2027.

Don't forget to mention the soldered SSD! A major reason I skipped the PS5 and stuck with the PS4 Pro was because of that. I had hope that the PS6 would have a user-replaceable SSD and a disc drive, so I could play PS5 disc games that way, and that hope is completely gone.
