News from Texas: right after a ridiculous proposal to ban furries from schools, the governor is piling on by citing furries to remove funding from public schools to pay private ones. It's "just politics" until they carve up education to enrich their cronies and deprive the poorest students.

Texas is such a big state, they have bully power to lead pressure elsewhere. They're merging panic about trans athletes and the furry-litterbox hoax as pretextual propaganda for the tip of this spear.

"Woke" is the new "communist" boogeyman cooked up by the right wing to accuse of hiding under people's beds. Anti-woke paranoia is a tool to divide people so government can serve oligarchy. There's been a lot of astroturfed noise to try and make furries part of the same boogeyman for a few years.

The noise about furries made news about ridiculous Republican politicians who would spread fake rumors, and sometimes have to walk them back or get crushed in elections. I think there were a few D.O.A. publicity-stunt attempts to make laws (Oklahoma?) But now it's official, from a powerful governor.

The thing is, if you want to neutralize this, it's not enough to refute it and say furries are just regular people. They will always have more bullshit for the firehose. You have to get to know what they're doing to seize public education, and stop them there. www.sacurrent.com/news/greg-ab...

Why the governor of Texas was spreading lies about furries, making a distraction with a mission to crush anyone under the tank treads while rolling this forward. bsky.app/profile/prop...

The Texas House has approved a $1 billion private school voucher bill — the culmination of more than three decades of work by Christian conservative donors. @jschwartzreporter.bsky.social explains how we got to this moment (published 2024):

Read this part. Diverting public funds into private pockets at the cost of kids education wasn't popular. Not even among Texas Republicans(!) So, the governor made it a loyalty test, separating sheep from goats, attacking those not in line with his agenda. The school issue didn't even matter for it.

That required stoking anger, and enemies to scapegoat, too. Getting people in line with the unpopular agenda meant attacking existing education - facts about racism being taught in schools needed to get demonized.

Texas Republicans proposed HB 4814, the "F.U.R.R.I.E.S. Act," to criminalize allowing furries in public schools, based on an urban legend. Here's my roundup of media coverage of the bill in the month since. otherkinnews.dreamwidth.org/97162.html Mirror: otherkinnews.tumblr.com/post/7812940...
