Modern Linux boot on a 15 year old handheld PC! The Pandora has a couple more decades left in it!

This is a Pandora 1GHz handheld Linux PC. Arm Cortex A8 inside of a TI DM3730 with 512MB of SDRAM. Its booting Alpine Linux with kernel version 6.20. Right now its all printing to a UART console. The cable for the screen ripped and I am waiting on a replacement

Maybe take a look at those, compile a kernel, load it in to an existing system, and start changing code and see what it does. It will take a while but you'll learn if you keep going

Linux Kernel Development by Robert Love was where I got started, but that was a decade ago. Still a good read but a little outdated. The Linux Programming Interface is more modern but I haven't read much of it.

Linux kernel stuff is hard, and there's lots of strange lore that isn't really written down anywhere. Its a learn by doing kind of thing. I do a fair amount of stuff with Linux at my job, which is where I learned most of this.

Whether or not you can run Linux on something is usually a question of the CPU architecture. x86, Arm, PowerPC, MIPS, etc. I am willing to bet that windows CE stuff ran on i386 hardware, you can compile a kernel for that. Not sure about PC104

So on an old laptop I have to uninstall Windows first, then install Linux and what kind of GB / RAM do I need? I don't know the first thing about this as you can see but I have a fab little ACER laptop/ tablet that wouldn't take Windows updates two years after I bought it in 2017!!
