the decision to ship fully android-based devices using Intel hardware instead of ARM, especially in a world where hardware like Snapdragon X Elite exists, seemed very strange to me. what developer is going to put time and money into optimizing for such a niche platform?

yeah but like... why even bother with Intel? it feels more like a decision made to look like a very serious computer rather than anything to do with the needs of the actual product. i guess that's in line with the Googlebook philosophy though, i really don't know who these things are for

Well, Google *is* marketing them as serious computers, so that might legitimately be the answer to your question. Plus, it doesn't hurt to have choice. Maybe more Android apps can get ported over to x86, like how Windows apps have been ported to ARM in the past couple of years.

Yeah, and MediaTek versions on the way some time in the future too. Will be interesting to see if either Arm or x86 becomes more common for Googlebooks longterm

The first Intel Atom based Android tablets shipped more than 10 years ago. Chromebooks with Android have been available with Intel chips for years.
