I'm convinced that, at least for millennials, that this notion of Disney animated films being a universal childhood cornerstone is mostly post hoc marketing. I watched Little Nemo 50 times as a kid and The Little Mermaid once, but only one of those has a media giant reselling it to me for 30 years.

I'm not saying there weren't Disney Kids, they certainly exist, but almost every Disney Adult I've known from childhood cared about X-Men or Sailor Moon a million times more than Aladdin when they were kids.

Has a Disney Channel kid, I completely agree, my obsession with X-men was 10x stronger than with any other serie from Disney. But at school, for some reason, it was more Disney than X-men, I was kind of weirder, I would say

My parents weren't rolling in it and also didn't want me to watch too much tv as a kid so I think I watched disney movies on vhs more than average, my husband is in the same situation.

Same, my parents didn't care too much about TV time but at my age we got Saturday morning cartoons and that was it for most of the day, so it was Disney VHS, a WB Classic Cartoons VHS or whatever we could record.

I was born in 84. I find that my love of animation is defined by mostly 90s shows, along with disney films. I guess the middleman would be Disney's Gargoyles. But then again, it's so unique, Disney refuses to release it in its original form. "Not fitting the brand"

Apples and oranges, I think. Disney movies, if you had the VHSes, were more "comfort food" than "rabid fandom obsession." I definitely cared more about cartoons like Batman, X-Men and Gargoyles, but in the pre-DVR or streaming era, you couldn't watch those on demand, just whatever eps were on TV

I think it was also the lore-ification that crept in over time. I remember discovering furries when I was 12, and found one person who was OBSESSED with "Meerbats" because one ep of the Lion King spin-off shows saw a meercat/bat hybrid fly off as a gag (after Timon had proved her WASN'T a vmapire)

There were the movies, the TV cartoons, the Little Golden Book adaptations that had slight tweaks that stood out and invited Baby's First Narrative Awareness moments. Paired with marketable accessibility and the burgeoning internet, Disney just started building these fandom spaces to market to 'em

We watched Rock-a-Doodle a thousand times more than we ever watched any Disney film growing up. That and Fievel Goes West.

This! ^ growing up we only had terrestrial TV in Ireland, so shows like X-Men or Sailor Moon were often showed at different times and out of order. Getting to watch one was the highlight of my week!

trying to think if when i was a kid i ever went to someones house and they had prominent disney stuff? If anything Looney Tunes were more popular, you could pretty reliably find a Taz or Wile E. Coyote in the toy box. Then pokemon hit and everything changed

Some years ago (I'm 46), a friend of mine (about 7 years younger) asked me which one was my childhood favourite Disney movie. When I told him that I hadn't watch that many Disney... God, never saw a more confused person in my life...
