Nothing Avi Lewis is saying is remotely “extreme,” but the rightward shift of media over three decades would make it seem that way to many.

The immediate status quo, centrist attacks on Avi Lewis are precisely why he is effective and needed. In face of growing right wing escalation, an unbashadely left opposition that is anti capitalist & internationalist is both principled *and* realistic.

Also, Nenshi’s gonna say what his consultants tell him he needs to for the futile oil vote. But don’t let Calgary set the bar for the rest of the country. (And when he’s done, get Janis Irwin into provincial leadership already, FFS)

A year into probably the biggest corruption scandal in provincial political history, possibly federal too, and Danielle Smith riding higher than ever. Don’t listen to Nenshi.

I wonder if the NDP would get more traction if they stopped giving scandals cutesy nicknames and just made it synonymous with Smith and the UCP. What the fuck is a CorruptCare?

“ Eat the rich” Notley “Queen of corporate bum welfare” No oil. No gas. No pipelines. LEAP manifesto Far left populist demagogue Socialism failed in Cuba Russia even China

We have exactly the same issue here in the UK, with a newly-resurgent Green Party led by similarly 'populist' Left-winger Zack Polanski. The shrieks of horror from the Right/Far Right media are music to our ears...

I really have no idea but I think if someone in federal politics could have competently articulated anti-neoliberalism in the 90s we might be a very different country today. But that’s about when the NDP let it go

I'm just not as convinced that the overton window has shifted as far to the right in Canada in the last 30 years as you implied because I think of Jean Chretien as WAAAAY to the right of Justin Trudeau and I think that on some (many?) files people would argue that he was also to the right of Carney.

I think there are many more factors at play in that shift than the individual political position of prime ministers. Most relevant among them to rightward shift: centralization of executive power, political impunity, surveillance capacity, economic inequality, erosion of social & health protections.

Yeah, implementing a totalitarian autocracy with technocratic surveillance while killing citizens is perceived as « meh » but thinking it would be nice if going to the hospital or university didn’t cost 50k instantly makes you a socialist.
