The main argument against DEI is that it means mediocre individuals are preferred above the most capable candidate, but the opposite is true. W/o DEI & anti-discrimination action, the ppl who get hired are the ones alike those in power, whilst the excellent are passed over for being different.

Dismissing DEI will make sure hiring processes will miss out on or even outright reject the best candidates. Without a way to counteract systemic, ingrained biases, those who rise to the top aren't the best - it's those who are the most white, most cis, most straight. Regardless of skill.

Of course, that's the whole point of the anti-DEI movement. It means that mediocre people are no longer afforded the privilege they were accustomed to, and it levels the playing field. Those in positions of power will typically experience movement towards equality as an attack.

Finally, using a tragedy to promote one's anti-DEI agenda is a new low, but hardly unexpected. My heart goes out to the families of the victims, and as a figure skating fan, this is especially heartbreaking to me. 💔
