It exists here in Italy, it's called "PEC". Widely used for contracts/etc.

SMS has replacements they just all suck, RCS is fine but it only works in a few countries on iphone which makes it useless for android users in those countries too

We really desperately need that last one. We've got the US weaponizing them politically on one end, and weird religious extremists influencing them and using them as a censorship mechanism on the other. Might seem like fringy stuff for most people right now, but give it just a little more time...
