I think about this a lot — so much so that I recall saying to one Actual Play person who is my age/career stage that we have similar challenge: our successes are not replicable by the route we took, but we ALSO want to help folks figure out new paths.

I think if your advice amounts to “don’t” then you’re being as unrealistic as those who are trying to pretend everything is Fine. we can and must acknowledge that the industry is especially precarious right now while figuring out how to help newcomers navigate that entrypoint

Be ready/aware for the inevitable uncertainty & deterrences that will occur. It's gonna be some shit. If a single "don't" deters, I'm unsure one would be ready for the next steps. Gotta have that tactical mindset to pivot, shift, dodge & adapt.

This is absolutely true for me and how I got into working full time in the TTRPG space. It's important to tell people NOT to follow my path because it doesn't exist anymore, then offer other suggestions. I cannot 'yes and' newcomers in this, however I can 'no but'.
