Several folks are rolling “crowd sourced” TTRPG-related databases. I love data! But I love SUSTAINABLE projects. Any site aiming to collect data (ESPECIALLY now) should have a page detailing: - metadata structure - initial seed corpus - intended audience - tech documentation - interoperability

CritRoleStats began with a core bibliography fueled by co-creator Maria K. Alberto’s dissertation work, then RaeLynFox & FirbolgForest & I sat down & used our shared skills to decide on useful structured data fields. It isn’t flashy — just a GForm that flows to GDoc — but it got the job done.

If you make a pretty but unusable site I am going to be … frustrated. Because that’s LESS than worthless. I want to believe that folks genuinely want to make discoverability better for designers, creators, projects, games, APs — all of which have had recent projects crop up in different forms.

This isn’t an “academics vs commercial” thing BTW — I’ve been a digital humanist long enough to see so many projects that were pretty get $$$$$ while the useful & carefully-built stuff languishes. But what I love about is that there are SO MANY data projects done pro bono by skilled TTRPG lovers.
