I think Ed is spot on about the over-hyping and over-spending on AI, but I think he is off on the "not early days" argument. 8 years out from an academic paper is nothing. A better comparison would be between the introduction of the Apple Newton (93) and the iPhone (07). Love your work Ed.

The argument is that the amount of capital, media and societal pressure has speed run this. I also bring up the iPhone and this is nothing like the iPhone! Anyway thank you for listening seriously

The "speed run" will not happen. That is more likely to blow up the economy and set development back. I respectfully disagree about the Newton. It was an early attempt at a computational consumer device. I would argue current chat is a lot more like the Newton than the iPhone, in more ways than one

No, the speed run already is happening. I don't think that Chat is like the Newton at all, because that was an operating system AND hardware problem that was solved in a completely different way to how Newton handled things

The Newton was trying to do something that the tech of 1993 wasn't able to accommodate. It was too expensive and too limited because of software and hardware limitations at the time. If they had spent $10k on each Newton and given them away for free it would be more like chat today.
