Premium Newsletter: There is no real market for renting out AI GPUs, and the majority of revenue comes from two companies - Microsoft and NVIDIA - the latter of which rents its own GPUs back from Neoclouds like CoreWeave so they can raise debt...to buy more GPUs. www.wheresyoured.at/is-there-any...

wheresyoured.atIs There Any Real Money In Renting Out AI GPUs?NVIDIA has become a giant, unhealthy rock on which the US markets — and to some extent the US economy — sits, representing 7-to-8% of the value of the market and a large percentage of the $400 billion...

How do you know this isn’t the plan? Financial engineering by the large tech companies to keep significant capex of buying GPUs off their balance sheets? They can then hide the huge depreciation expense, protect margins and returns from market questions and parade as “capital light” businesses again

I'm also reminded of the latter days of the dot-com bubble. Near the end I felt like 90% of the websites were trying to "monetize user-generated content" by hosting ads for other websites... doing the exact same thing. So you had this huge pyramid of sites with no revenue and eventually most...

...of the VC funding that was floating all these websites flowed downhill to Google, which was serving the ads. I'm also reminded of the small town in New Jersey whose residents made it through the Depression by taking in each others' laundry. I feel like that's next.

I feel like the end game here is that (almost) all of the money raised by OpenAI gets paid to CoreWeave*, which in turn hands that money to NVidia for GPUs (either directly or via ODMs). When CoreWeave fails, NVidia keeps all the money, and the lenders are left holding the collateral, namely...

...a big pile of GPUs for which there is no longer any demand, and which in any case are rapidly depreciating. The whole business reminds me uncannily of Milo Minderbinder in Catch-22. If you've read it, you know. So I guess we can add that book to the pile of texts that uncannily predicted our...

Meanwhile standard graphic GPUs are becoming rarer and rarer with each generation to the extent that large GPU clients are trying to make their old workloads look like AI ones just so they can use the new chips, a tremendous use of everyone's time

Every time companies reinvent the concept of “a bank,” it goes badly. Especially when said bank is (a) not recognized as such and (b) not regulated. Time to reread David Liss’ “A Conspiracy of Paper,” to remind myself that everything old is new again. Also, Thank you for all you do, Ed.

So when I was asked to interview to help the NVIDIA engineers in this program be able to communicate better, because, face it, they aren't the most social beings on the planet, I was told GPUs are basically it, have always been it, always will be it for NVIDIA, they just need to sell that publicly

Anyone lending money against collateral comprised of over-inflated AI asset slop is insane. This is a circle jerk, and the fed isn't going to bail it out this time. And now Jensen spends $5B to prop up the valuation of Trump's 10% stake in INTC? What a massive house of cards.

This all sounds like Theodore Rozackd cult of information. Develop a technological need, not to solve an actual problem, but just to sell processors.
