I don’t like my writing style as much back then but I’m proud of this piece from August 2024 about the collapse of the Software As A Service industry. I hadn’t learned finance fully at that time and thus didn’t think about the debt side! Rookie mistake www.wheresyoured.at/saaspocalyps...

The collapse of the SaaS business model is one of those things that I’m not sure people will see coming. You see it with the tens of billions of dollars of distressed debt from SaaS companies. You even see it in the slow collapse of Oracle’s business. This is also a mainstay of VC investment.

It’s not just SaaS that’s under pressure. The whole way companies are structured — and how we organize people to execute on goals — is being seriously challenged right now.

I always thought the SaaS was a blight that would never disappear, but your article shed some light on things I hadn't considered. It's a bit terrifying in a way because as AI goes, so will SaaS, which makes me wonder how the computer landscape will look once that happens.

I'm starting to feel that tech generally, (and SaaS in particular) have crossed the line into utility without realising it. Like water and electricity there's no real space for innovation, we just need it to turn up and do the job reliably, but they're not facing up to the work of fixing leaks.
