every single person pushing this angle is intellectually bankrupt. The data centers being built today are for NOTHING other than AI compute, and are much, much larger and more destructive. If none of them got built, services like online banking, social media and streaming would continue to function.

This is like the car industry refusing to make anything other than stretch humvees and saying "OH I GUESS WE'LL JUST TAKE AWAY ALL THE TAXIS THEN, SEE HOW YOU LIKE THAT"

When you hear "NVIDIA" and "data center" in the same breath, know that this person is not talking about VOIP or Instagram or online banking or online gaming, they are explicitly talking about generative AI services. These data centers aren't useful for anything else.

I've been wondering, what does make them useless for other things? They would still be a huge destructive waste not worth the "at least making infrastructure" justification I imagine, but them being outright useless for anything else surprises me, in my limited understanding of this kind of tech.

I think the issue would come down to the fact there isn't a demand for more data centers for other purposes. If the ai crash happens and they try to convert all those ai data centers to other services the cost for those services would tank and they wouldn't be profitable plus can't make it a loss.

Data centers are factories that manufacture lost jobs.
