what's wild about this is there's no "women's spaces" pretence—she's objecting to a trans person being in a non-gendered emergency room & when called on it confirms that's what she meant

> What is your stance on pressuring the Israeli government to end its occupation of Palestine? Is this Palestine ’from the river to the sea’, or is another definition intended in this context? If the goal is the former, I‘m not sure ‘pressure on the Israeli government’ is going to suffice.

One resolution (which passed 14-13) calls on Raman to meet with DSA-LA leaders on Oct. 31 to explain her position on BDS. If she does not satisfactorily affirm her support for BDS, the NPC will vote on Nov. 1 to force DSA-LA to withdraw its endorsement of her. docs.google.com/document/d/1...

State owned media is unnecessary when private media can be bribed or coerced into self-censorship. Hoorah for the First Amendment. Every US citizen has the right to self-publish a rival to the NYT, & they won’t be subject to politically motivated prosecution (unless it starts getting traction).

Huge headlines around the world. In major US corporate media, complete silence. Something fishy here.

In hindsight people talk about the huge valuation for no actual tech as exceptional. She built a very conventional lab-testing company, with plenty of revenue, whose valuation was inflated 10x by promises of tech vaporware. That’s Tesla! That’s WeWork! It’s a common startup business model.

The question anyone who has ever been even tangentially invited invoked in startup culture asks about Holmes is NOT how she did the fraud; it is why she so uniquely got punished. “Sexism” is a common answer, but “she sucked at fraud” has always struck me as a bigger factor.

You can argue the distinctions don’t matter, but it seems relevant that Larry Page was an actually-smart grad student who turned real research into a trillion-dollar company, while Musk was a middling student who couldn’t cut grad school and made a career of stealing credit from actual researchers.

Dave Karpf@davekarpf.bsky.social

Left unmentioned is that this was a philosophical argument they got into at a party, probably on a lot of drugs, in which Page made Musk look dumb and then Musk got all mad about it. These are less serious people than the text would lead you to believe.

The powerful executives who cozied up to Trump didn't oops accidentally forget about pendulum swings. They either: 1) Like the fascism 2) Calculated it was here to stay, so going along was savvy 3) Saw no real downside, no consequences when the pendulum swung Crucial to show them 3 was a mistake

A load bearing mythos of pop leftism is that the Dems used to be good and for the working man and then embraced neoliberalism so the working man got sold out, instead of "white America as a whole turned on the Dems after the Civil Rights Act and began tearing down their own commons and prosperity"

Do not underestimate the possibility that this turns out to be a brilliant political manoeuvre that helps Republicans turn the electoral tide and win power in the liberal stronghold that is {checks notes} Texas

Look, I'm an evolutionary physiologist, ok? I believe in biology, not this sentimental feminist claptrap. Women are biologically optimized to be nurturers. They run households, they don't fight lions. That's why they're the only ones we can trust to govern our complex, industrialized civilization.

Brazil going the way of South Korea. Basically around the world women are desperately trying to keep power out of the hands of incredibly stupid fascistic grifters while men keep trying to hand it over. Men are an embarrassing cringe gender.

Of course a win for non-authoritarian leaders or movements does not automatically mean all problems are solved or that authoritarian forces can't come back in future. But it is worth maintaining hope and optimism, because if people succumb to nihilism and apathy then democracy cannot survive.

A further thought on this, because it's been in my head all day, what's quite striking is that nothing in the film is novel? The allegations have been reported before, they're not even that unique to the IDF, but it's the presentation, the perpetrators coming to terms with it, that makes it work.

NAZA is excellent; the cinematography and content consistently powerful but understated. It has a clear answer to "how could this happen?" And it's a story of systems, and algorithms and lost accountability. Each step is just far enough removed that you don't feel the weight of it.

This drives me CRAZY. I grew up playing sports w/ boys. I played on a U12 boys select soccer team, b4 switching to a U12 girls team that kept beating us. Nobody had any issue with any of it. Youth sports have never had the strict sex/gender boundaries that “XX-XY” activists are now trying to defend.

Andrew D Thaler@drandrewthaler.bsky.social

I live in a rural town and, like, I don't know how to tell you this, but the girls play on the boys team and vice versa all the time because otherwise we don't have enough players for a game and it's literally always fine so stop being weirdos about kids sports and just let trans kids play.

Addendum: Multiple people have pointed out, correctly, that Lula ran with a non-fascist right-wing politician as his VP, and therefore compromised politically in a lot of ways to try to win. Where I was coming from was that Lula was uncompromising with *fascism*, but the full context is important.

He's the first presidential candidate ever to come from behind in the first round to win the second round, so there's a lot, lot more to his victory than I'm qualified to speak to. But it seems pretty clear that if he'd simply run on preserving the status quo then he'd have lost, and heavily.

When the people want it badly enough, corruption won’t save dictators.

George Potter 🔶@georgepotter.bsky.social

Bolsonaro had corrupt media on his side, Meta interference on his side, US propaganda operations, and his party's officials actively sabotaging public transport in Lula strongholds to prevent turnout. Yet he was still beaten by the power of voter turnout.

Only the cordon sanitaire can defeat fascism.

George Potter 🔶@georgepotter.bsky.social

It's really important to pay attention to the fact that Lula beat the fascist candidate not by compromising and trying to meet fascist voters in the middle, but by sticking to his guns, promising prosecutions for election interference, and mobilising his own voters to turn out in greater numbers.

What Jason Crow says. Indeed, isn't it obvious? How can a self-respecting country cede control over vital military systems in the middle of a war to a foreign drug addict? And how could this not be a defining issue in the midterm election? Yet US corporate media want to simply look the other way.
