around age 8 I started having to compulsively count the number of letters in every word I said, read, or that others said. I used to get told off a lot because it didn't seem like I was listening, or because I would talk very slowly (I was counting while talking). I remember it being stressful 😅

Reminds me of when I was a child. Whenever I saw a digital clock, if the time was on the hour or all the numbers were the same, I would have to stare at the clock until it changed.

I got a lot of pressure from adults and broke the habit after a few years, but in hindsight, this was probably arithmomania - aka compulsive counting, a word I only even discovered a few years ago. It's a form of OCD and I long for a day when the signs of it get picked up better in children

Every time I use stairs, I count steps. Every time. I've lived in this house almost 30 years, I still count steps. And yet, if you ask me how many steps are on my stairs, I'm like.... ??? I can't remember.
