If you like astronomy posts, then you'll probably really like the astronomy feeds! If you didn't know, Bluesky gives you direct control over your social algorithm. Instead of doomscrolling, look at space instead:

no, we don't need to rebuild everything from scratch. we spent decades improving our stack, building on others' successes and lessons, weaving a huge web of trust between teams that depend on each other. a clean slate disrupting it all isn't progress; the process and people are what matter

I'm never 100% happy with Firefox, but I've used it for the last 20 years and see no reason to use any other browser. All modern browsers are fast, the only difference is that the big one tracks everything you do while Firefox does not

Firefox@firefox.com

Since 2004, this community has helped make Firefox and the open internet possible. Our “Come Back to Firefox” campaign reunites a few early internet icons to remind people what made the internet special, and why it’s worth protecting.

I wish they had a better funding system (vs. selling default search providers), I dislike the new Nova redesign, but on the whole I still see 0 reason to use Chrome

hey #atdevs - if there was ever a time to post on Meta platforms it’s **NOW** people are talking all about the new AI policy and where they’re moving next. PUT YOUR APP IN FRONT OF THEM. And tell them why joining your app (in the Atmopshere) is **BETTER** than all their other options. #atproto

The PHP vulnerability today has been handled absolutely awfully. Unreal that the exploit was leaked before a fix was even available

Scan@scanash.com

Can't understand why the PHP maintainers scheduled a security update about a vulnerability that was leaked and then was actively being exploited I'm pretty sure as one of the biggest technologies in the web, you could've you know, released a patch quickly

finally got to reading maevyn's post. add this one to your queue. two paragraphs that hit me particularly hard

My thoughts on the current state of AI driven software development, why I'm no longer concerned about a runaway intelligence explosion, and what I think is a far worse outcome we could be walking into maevyn.codes/decoherence

ok so funny story, the psychologist was very impressed by the 23 pages of notes I brought to my autism assessment today (not kidding lmao)

tbf this was some of the best advice I saw before the appointment and I'm so glad I had them, it was so useful for not forgetting things. 3 hours of diagnostic appointment is really long and tough

An excellent read about the current state of AI in software development

I think it's finally time for me to accept that my new laptop (right) should be as sticker bombed as my old laptop (left)

I need to write this up in the next few days, but there is about to be a full event stream of astronomy transients on the AT Protocol, ready to use for science - and that's awesome!

no offence but why is the British public being asked about my medical diagnosis, would it also like to check out my ankles and my elbows to decide whether I really have hypermobile joints, should I cough on them next time I have a cold so they can confirm that I'm ill

*Every single one* of these "ways to tell that someone doesn't like you" is an autistic trait. So, this is ableist bullshit. It takes immense effort for me to make eye contact with people. Paradoxically, I can socialise better when I'm *not* doing all of these things.

chronic problem in this industry with people mistaking sigmoids for exponentials tbh

Tim Duffy@timfduffy.com

Anthropic just told potential investors its Q3 revenue was $16.8B, previous reporting had them reaching $65B run rate by the end of July. Unless there's an accounting difference between the figures, this points to a significant revenue growth slowdown in the last two months.

Have you looked at the night sky recently? It is ABSURD how many satellites there are, and it will get >1000× worse in our lifetimes. A few billionaires and state actors will ruin the night sky for the next few *centuries*. This ought to be a much, much bigger story than it is

Pauline Barmby@pbarmby.bsky.social

The title says it all: arxiv.org/abs/2610.10834 Still in the peer review process but we* felt it Important to get this out there. Satellite companies are not complying with visual brightness limits. Our estimates are that it will get worse, especially at twilight. *I’m a minor part of “we” here

#WSocial’s advice here is TERRIBLE - deleting your account won’t change a thing. Just now I found the record of a minor (15yo) who was verified by #WIdentity. His account status is now “taken down” but his full name, nationality and approx. date of birth are still visible on W's verification list!

There is a world in which AI progress is a little bit slower in exchange for not turning back to fossil fuel power again, and it speaks to the immense greed of tech oligarchs that they'd rather see the Earth burn than their share prices grow more slowly

Ketan Joshi@ketanjoshi.co

Finally realised what tech companies insisting 'you need to suffer some hurt right now to enjoy a glorious future' reminded me of

I find the expectation that all trains must be perfectly on time a little unfair, given that the private sector form of transport (flying) often has regular and huge delays

Trains could be a lot better in many places, but I also think that expecting perfection is always going to bring some disappointment too. Even when trains are delayed it's much more comfortable of an experience than flying

around age 8 I started having to compulsively count the number of letters in every word I said, read, or that others said. I used to get told off a lot because it didn't seem like I was listening, or because I would talk very slowly (I was counting while talking). I remember it being stressful 😅

Phil Lewis@phillewis.bsky.social

Tell me a story about yourself that sounds like a lie but is actually true

I got a lot of pressure from adults and broke the habit after a few years, but in hindsight, this was probably arithmomania - aka compulsive counting, a word I only even discovered a few years ago. It's a form of OCD and I long for a day when the signs of it get picked up better in children

I am in the absolute minority here but I'm so happy that the nights are getting longer again it also means less sun and colder weather, which is dom nice after this awful summer

(this is not to invalidate people who struggle with seasonal depression ofc, which is a real issue for many and can be really horrible. I am in the weird night owl majority though that could probably live in deep space and still be happy)
