We should have just refused to negotiate AT ALL until they dropped all threats and tariffs and adhered to the previous trade deal.

I do not understand WHY anything else was considered? You cannot forge an honest deal with a bunch of carnival barker conmen. 🍊 will take this and move the goalposts to steal more of our sovereignty. Carney HAD buy in from Canadians - he has blown it. We can see plainly why key Ministers departed

Carney covered all the bases with this approach. For those in the affected industries he had to show a good faith effort, perhaps knowing this would be the result anyway. But this is just getting started. Hoping, maybe futilely, for a global hard reset of trade relations with the USA.

I feel the same way, but it’s also incumbent on the federal government to consider and try and mitigate the damage that Trump’s bullying could do; it’s easier for those of us with little skin in the game to stand on principle, but some Canadians would undoubtedly suffer.

I’m 100% on side with you. I wish we had just told the US to “F#ck Right Off”. Then again, I also don’t work in a business that is impacted by tariffs (I’m retired). If I did I might feel differently. But I don’t.

I'm waiting for Kate Harrison on Power & Politics to complain that Carney wasn't negotiating sooner and that, had he done this, we'd have a deal by now. This is exactly what she'll say because many conservatives, even moderate ones, think this. The team had to put in a good faith effort.
