This thread. Thank you for pointing out that today’s referendum is a continuation of sentiment that has existed for decades. Plus ça change…

gentle reminder about Alberta referendums: they never deliver change; they never go away. 🧵

“He does not view the world as a collection of sovereign nations; he sees it instead as territories run by mob bosses.” Weaker nations, especially America’s allies, can be abused and threatened; the godfathers, historically enemies, are peers to be treated with respect. Have we hit bottom yet?

Tom Nichols@radiofreetom.bsky.social

Humiliating and dangerous: Trump has now finally just made America an ally of the Kremlin and is aiding Putin in his war against an American friend and partner. Shameful betrayal of a US friend, and pathetic submission to a US enemy. www.theatlantic.com/ideas/2026/1...

Well that’s not good.

We’ve been over this before: Every Global 7500 that Bombardier builds in 🇨🇦 has 2 GE engines built in Indiana, 🇺🇸. Every Challenger that Bombardier builds in 🇨🇦 has 2 Honeywell engines built in Arizona. 🇺🇸. Bombardier employs 3,000+ 🇺🇸s & has 2,800 🇺🇸 suppliers. Not so smart.

Lake Ontario's name comes from the Wyandot word Ontarí'io, which is typically translated as "beautiful lake". The Kanienʼkéha called it Katarokwi. Samuel de Champlain called it Lac de St. Louis. The name Lacus Ontario was first recorded in 1660 by Francis Creuxius.

Clearly a mistake to put so many eggs in the US basket. But can diversification be accomplished on the backs of small to medium enterprises? It’s hard for this non-economist to see that multinationals and foreign-owned businesses care at all about Canada’s economic independence and sovereignty.

“But it must do so within a context in which the question “is it legal?” no longer makes sense. Instead, the question confronting Canada is: “How can a liberal-democratic nation survive next to a much more powerful country with no respect for the rule of law?”

Blayne Haggart@bhaggart.bsky.social

It would be great if the Canadian government took this to heart. Judging from their actions, it's not clear that officials, and many business groups, truly understand that the old Canada-US relationship is over. From November 2024.

can't stop laughing at this Poilievre: "We will reinstill a warrior culture, not a woke culture."

Sinclair draws a line from Tecumseh in 1812 to today’s Wab Kinew to remind us of the “inherent value in this 159-year-old project, imperfectly designed by the ancestors of Indigenous Peoples and Canadians and complicatedly handled by all of us today.”

This thread by Justin Ling says it all. “In Trump’s gangster economics, you never shake down a mark just once: You keep coming back.” We need to walk away from these “negotiations” and steel ourselves for some tough times to ensure our independence.

Justin Ling@justinling.ca

Trump is posting on Truth Social that he's terminating negotiations with Canada over a "fake" ad criticizing tariffs (that was run by Ontario, and which isn't fake.) It's all theatre. There was never a deal to be gotten. Trump just wants to claim victory. #giftlink www.thestar.com/opinion/cont...

He’s wrong about everything, and thinks he’s right about everything. Hard to tell which is worse. The war will end when Russia decides no longer to fight. The US could make that happen with a few simple policies. Instead the Trump administration offers ridiculous analysis and pathetic excuses.

RAW MILK TIME I was surprised to find most of the "raw milk cures ___" talking points from the last 20+ years come from one (1) raw milk dairy farmer in California. Let's get to know him!

“People started playing with: “Well, what would it feel like to just not give a shit if people die?” And once you play with that, you’re playing with fire. And it starts spreading. And it becomes, “Well, who else could we say it’s OK if they die?”” Great interview. Hope she’s wrong about Carney.

Allow me to address the elephant in the room: The decades-long outsourcing of domestic manufacturing to China was not an insidious Chinese conspiracy for dominance but the greedy strategy of the American ruling class to explode its profit margins by exploiting global inequality.

One thing that I was thought was revealing about the divisions within Canada: When Carney acknowledged Poilievre's hard work on his campaign in his victory speed, the crowd of Liberals cheered. When Poilievre mentioned Carney in his concession speech, there was loud booing.

Low info big mad voters - a recipe for disaster exploited by leaders who like to mirror the big mad back at them and feed them disinformation. We escaped this time but next time?

drew brown@drewfoundland.bsky.social

- poilievre losing his seat complicates things & given all the bad blood & open internal feuding during the campaign an outbreak of Tory Syndrome seems likely - future canadian elections seem likely to be fought over low-info big-mad voters (of all stripes) in a fractured + poisoned media landscape
