The FSB has detained a 35-year-old Swedish citizen who fought for Ukraine at the border with Latvia. He had previously fought on the side of Ukraine and was travelling to Russia “under the pretence of joining the Russian Armed Forces <…> to carry out acts of sabotage and terrorism” (1/7)

A case is opened against him for illegally crossing the border. The FSB is also “considering” whether to charge him with “terrorism” and “mercenary activity.” It states that the Swede was the commander of a drone unit in the “Aidar” regiment, recognised in Russia as a “terrorist organisation” (2/7)

The FSB published a video of the man’s interrogation following his detention. The montage reportedly included a Ukrainian military document (the authenticity of which has not been confirmed) in which the name Stalkrantz Lindholm Freddy Mikael is mentioned (3/7)

They also included a video clip of the Swedish man from the Instagram account of the Ukrainian Foreigner Recruiting Centre. It was posted in February 2026. In it, the man described how he had been building up his endurance by undertaking forced marches whilst carrying weights (4/7)

A relative of the Swedish man detained by the FSB confirmed that he had fought on Ukraine’s side. The unnamed relative told SVT (Sveriges Television) that the detainee lived in the Stockholm area, “fought for Ukraine and had been there at various times” (5/7)

“For me, this [detention] came as a surprise. He was there, fighting for Ukraine for about half a year, then came home, and recently went back there again. To be honest, I don’t know exactly what he was doing there; I didn’t ask him” (6/7)

Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson and the country’s Foreign Ministry told the channel that, as yet, they were only aware of the detention from media reports: “The Foreign Ministry has taken note of the media reports, but is not currently handling such a case” (7/7) Video: FSB press service
