Being into retro games is annoying because I'll tell people that I like the janky first installment of a series more than most of the sequels with considerably more polish + content + production value and people will look at me like I want them to eat a jar of live bees

🦝people invert their normals when we tell them we vastly prefer the original link's awakening over the DX one like "but the DX one has color!"

🐭for us it's largely due to the fact that the DX one makes dialogue unskippable and slow, though there's a bunch of other little things too (like just seeing all the tutorial tablets, which the switch version took out again hehe)

Totally get it. The first game in a series often has this weird, untamed energy before everything got sanded down by sequels. Jank can be part of the charm, honestly.

I don't know if it enters this discussion because it isn't quite janky, but after playing X1 through X4 and Zero 1 through 4, Mega Man X continues to be my favorite of that whole series.

People will see a game where many enemy encounters are completely nullified by whipping under them and think it's peak because something something player freedom

It just has this weird experimental energy to it, while Zero Mission is just a pretty good 2D Metroid that doesn't reach the heights of the prior 2 entries for me.
