you don't have to use an extension to do this on Firefox • open settings > search • scroll down to search shortcuts and click add • fill out according to the image below (text in alt text) • click add engine • scroll back up and select "DuckDuckGo No Ai" under "default search engine"

DuckDuckGo@duckduckgo.com

Since Google revealed its plans for an AI search overhaul, visits to our "No AI" search page have tripled…and they’re still rising! Want to make it your default on Chrome or Firefox? Grab our No-AI extensions and banish AI-assisted answers, chat, and AI images. (1/3)

So the extension route is literally just a permission layer to add an item to the search engine list that looks and acts like the others, most notably having an icon instead of the plain 🔍 that FF doesn't let you change for some reason. (The bulk of the XPI is image files.)

I *think* not allowing javascript and being sent to the pure html version of the site might also do this? You probably lose some functionality you'd *want* that way as well, but eh, good enough for me.

that's true; but i think also, all this extension does it set that up. actually (checks) also has options for running in private windows and on sites with restrictions.

it just asks you if you want to change your search engine to noai.duckduckgo.com while also adding tracking to ddg's site so they know ur using the extension big nothingburger basically

On one hand, I want to give them the benefit of the doubt and say it’s for accessibility, because not everyone knows that you can even change the search engine in Chrome (you can). But on the other… DDG is too big now and it smells fishy when they have AI on their default search engine. Idk.

i guess there's an even easier way:

or apparently on Firefox you can also just open noai.duckduckgo.com, right click the search text box, and click search engine. lol
