Just watched Field of Dreams for the first time as an adult. There is A LOT more going on there than I remembered from seeing it as a kid. What a film.

I highly recommend the book, "Shoeless Joe," on which it is based. I had read it when I saw the movie and the movie has ever since seemed to me like weak tea by comparison.

Came here to say something like this. The different characters that the book uses to reflect the archetypes , versus the movie, has always been striking to me.

Without getting into spoilers, what was most compelling for me about the book -- that the movie mostly lacked -- was the darkness and confusion of Ray's journey. Then there was the matter of the famous, then-living real-life character near the center of the story.

Yeah your second point was my whole point. Agree about the journey. Wonder if that certain character was mainly a GenX thing.

It's interesting, I found the movie worked for me better exactly because of that change. It was too much real-life baggage and broke my immersion.
