Yep, I travel a lot internationally and have never encountered someone who was unpleasant to me just because I’m American. I think many Americans who don’t travel abroad much seem to *hugely* overestimate the odds of non-Americans being rude to them simply for being Americans.

I've also found it rare to meet an America hater across the 6ish continents I've worked across. Most people are excited that you came to visit and are being polite and respectful (bonus points if you try to speak a couple local language greetings). They'll also generally br very curious about you!

I think that's right. We have so many US tourists in Iceland, and while we might make very gentle fun of them among ourselves – those outfits, those accents, those booming voices! – you'd have to be really disrespectful and annoying for anyone to actually treat you badly.

At the same time, a lot of people around the world have valid reasons to strongly dislike your empire. If a regular American occasionally catches a little flack for that, that's the unfortunate flip side of your various privileges, which imo you should be able to accept with grace and understanding.

in my experience it’s more that I agree so much with other people’s negative view of American politics that they often reverse it and start arguing that maybe the U.S. isn’t *quite* as fucked up as I think it is

but yes I certainly won’t begrudge anyone disliking the U.S., especially nowadays
