Imagine if instead of regulating drone risks the normal way (which we did), we instead paid weird bloggers lots of money to worry about superintelligent dogs sprouting thumbs and using drones to kill us. This is pretty much how the US is approaching AI risks and regulations. My latest:

i am inviting anyone from a legacy media organization to explain to me why the house judiciary dems report on trump’s epstein’s ties and multiple allegations of rape isn’t worthy of extensively reporting on. i’m serious. i want to understand.

it’s evil and we need to stop it

jamelle@jamellebouie.net

i don't think anyone should run explicitly on banning online gambling but i do think that a democratic-led government should just quietly take steps to undermine the industry and create an inhospitable regulatory environment

Finally, I’m also (equally god help me) beginning to consider getting back into journalism jobs. I have a lot of highly technical OSINT and data journalism skills and investigative reporting experience, and some people with questionable taste seem to think I’m funny, hit me up….?

I’m also trying to sort out the prospect of starting my own NGO, which REALLY isn’t my first choice but if it appears necessary…

Related: I’m still looking for leads and help on jobs, fellowships, and freelance contracts on drones, GIS, aid, disaster, OSINT, tech ethics, and journalism. I simply will not work for evil people and/or weapons manufacturers, which is also why I haven’t had paying work since Trump 2.0 began.

Drone tech has so many incredible applications for so many industries and if you want to make any sort of living you have to work for an illiterate Nazi pervert dweeb who collects erotic anime figurines.

There’s always a delicate tension between being very direct about “I need help figuring out WTF I do next” with your network versus seeming desperate. (I’m not desperate in that I don’t have money concerns, but I am desperate in that I desperately miss having a career).

It’s been a wild 24 hours for me on BlueSky and I’m getting so many messages asking what can be learned from Brazil and applied globally on top of the below. Once again, I’m not a political expert but this is what I’ve seen as a consensus amongst specialists and voters so far 🧵

Rafa Sales Ross@rafiews.com

I’m not a political journalist, so was gladly surprised at the community I found here last night. To Americans anxious about the upcoming elections, a key thing we learned in Brazil that might help you: DO NOT engage with the far-right online. Don’t share rage bait. Amplify your people. Ignore them.

(Still page 5) “Today, it’s clear not only that AGI is possible but also that, in some sense, the hard part is already done.” 🤯😡 Okay, so the problem for me here is that my book pub date is 2.5 months from now. And the thesis of my book is (basically) “no it fucking is not. See: history.”

this is pretty important context that I'm not sure some people acting in good faith on here on the topic who also don't live in one of the states in question fully understand when I say "hammered" I mean it's basically all that the opposition has been running

Mike Black@mikeblack114.bsky.social

at this point I'm not sure if there is a dem red state candidate who has done any sort of trans pivot anything who hasn't also been getting hammered by "they want to trans your kid" ads

The vile attacks on Amy Acton need to be seen in the context of a party that *needs* people to believe women fabricating sexual assaults is common as rainwater. Because it’s pretty much the only way to evade the conclusion that the president is a rapist.

Marisa Kabas@marisakabas.bsky.social

Beyond disgusted by even more rape allegations against the President of the United States. "In total, more than 25 different women...have independently accused Donald Trump of rape, sexual assault, or other sexual misconduct." Report w/ new details: democrats-judiciary.house.gov/sites/evo-su...

You can put aside socialist-leftist prescriptions about how dangerous that alliance is, if you would like. But everything I read, across the political spectrum, agrees that these countries are connected. It is just civic maturity to pay attention to Brazil's election.

I basically have to custom build my own cinelifter drones to do aerial videography at this point

It genuinely does suck and is *bad* that it feels like there’s almost nowhere to go for people who 1. Want to work on robotics (like drones) and 2. Don’t want to build weapons.

honestly a pretty interesting case in how the company managed its perception (with lots of beer ads, especially!) to hide its origin from its own workers. Glad they're figuring it out, allies welcome whenever they get there

It's good for people who work at tech companies to realize that benign premises are often masks for contracts they're uncomfortable with, and also Boston Dynamics *origin* is as a defense contractor building robot mules for the military.

To riff on this: while reporting on DARPA in February 2020 (a Normal Time) I saw the demonstration of robotic navigation in underground environments, hinged on and framed as rescue tools. Entirely plausible! compelling tech. Fully military www.c4isrnet.com/unmanned/rob... bsky.app/profile/fain...

c4isrnet.comDARPA wants to fill in a void on underground robotic operationsIn the bones of a never-used nuclear reactor, competitors at the DARPA-hosted Subterranean Challenge are exploring how robots can find people and items underground.

No one is Assigned Marine at Birth. Marines are made, and they get really mad if you tell them someone who is a Marine isn't a Marine.

Sky Marchini@sky.skymarchini.net

The other thing here is heggles is an army guy and (it is my understanding) the marines generally do not like army people telling them what to do (and in particular saying who gets to be a marine)

yes please.

In his acceptance speech, Lula says he will work to regulate digital platforms in Brazil. “Digital crimes must be dealt with like real-life crimes.” This comes after Meta directly interfered with the Brazilian elections, favouring Flávio Bolsonaro.

Faine Greenwood reposted

None of us should forget this. Meta should be subjected to corporate death penalty and permanently broken up into small pieces.

This drives me CRAZY. I grew up playing sports w/ boys. I played on a U12 boys select soccer team, b4 switching to a U12 girls team that kept beating us. Nobody had any issue with any of it. Youth sports have never had the strict sex/gender boundaries that “XX-XY” activists are now trying to defend.

Andrew D Thaler@drandrewthaler.bsky.social

I live in a rural town and, like, I don't know how to tell you this, but the girls play on the boys team and vice versa all the time because otherwise we don't have enough players for a game and it's literally always fine so stop being weirdos about kids sports and just let trans kids play.

I will also note that there used to be a LOT of money being directed at purely civilian drone use cases and companies until a couple years ago. Trump 2.0 has had a hugely destructive impact here, especially in the U.S.

Drones and other robots do have a huge number of civilian and society-benefiting uses. We need ways for talented people to be able to work on those applications, without having to compromise their morals to build weapons for ICE (and similar malignant buyers).

Imagine a world in which enslavers had been stripped of their assets & exiled. Where their assets & power were distributed to the people from whom they had been stolen in the first place. Where the architects of Jim Crow & lynching were opining abt “the good ole days” from some distant hovel.

We live in a country that has historically privileged property & power & willingly excused or even abetted white conservative lawlessness so long as it advances those interests. That is incompatible with democracy, equality, & basic stability & simply cannot be tolerated any longer.

Faine Greenwood reposted

We must do what the country refused to do during Reconstruction: dispossess & banish those who organized & facilitated this vile & lawless regime.

The persecution of @repilhan.bsky.social just days before an election is vile and politically-motivated. I'm leading 175 House Democrats in denouncing this. When we retake power, we have to seriously look at how we can stop these abuses of power — starting with the power of the purse.
