A worrisome number of people seem to believe that posting deranged “I like animals better than people” comments on Facebook posts about shelter dogs is all they need to do to be Good and Virtuous - it’s basically Furbaby Indulgences.

This "virtue eater" role doesn't even require that a person do anything useful for the welfare of dogs in general or even their own personal pet — so long as your feelings are correct, you can be a hero of sentimentality.

Lots of people out there rending their garments and shrieking because a super aggressive dog is about to be put down as it’s bitten people and no one can handle it safely, but notably, very few volunteers for “I will accept the liability of owning this predatory beast that rips flesh”

If these people actually cared about pets, they’d be fundraising for subsidized and free community spay/neuter programs, is what I’m saying

Everything serious I've ever read by people who spend long hours doing the hard & dirty work of animal welfare has said we must combine a cull with fixing with greater law enforcement (& in some cases new regs) with a big public ed campaign to have a *prayer* of zeroing in a sustainable situation.
