Library has a vote this year to add about $4-5 a month to people's taxes, so that they can build a bigger one (old one is from 1990, when the town was 15,000 people, we're at 34,000 now). Emailed ALL the alderman what direction I was hoping they'd vote.

My town closed loads of libraries from 2008 on. There were such hard battles to keep them open, and then poof. Gone. My nearest was a pretty decent size. Two floors, lots of old records.

We only have the one and there's physically no where to expand at the location. They want to move to a new location *town already owns* "Every time I go no one is there" They must go when it's not open because this view is normal.

Obviously everyone hates additional charges, but we've saved over $1500 this year alone on book checkouts, we benefit from this move (more books! more programs!) All the rich people in town are *bitching their head off* that they have to help. The library we have now is "just fine" (they don't go!)

"our taxes will go up to $7500!!" congrats on living in a 600,000 dollar house? Maybe go check out some fucking books. Or the fishing pole. Or go release ladybugs with your grand kids. "We have the internet, what's the point?" you don't live in this town ALONE. There are OTHER PEOPLE HERE.

As a single man with no kids, my preferred argument right back at them is "I have to pay for YOUR kids' school because it's a public good, so even if YOU don't go to the library, you should pay for the library for OTHER people as a public good, because that's FAIR."

Some of them argue we should use the money to fix the highschool or build a new one, and then the SAME people also complain when town goes "okay, this is what it will cost to fix/build" None of them care beyond their own nose. I prefer educated kids. Even before we had one lol
