🧵 Pope Leo XIV's #MagnificaHumanitas landed on Monday. A thread on why its concept of work is disappointingly defensive – and why, despite that, it contains more fuel for the #UBI debate than most people will notice. 1/9 www.vaticannews.va/en/pope/news...

Start with the disappointment. When Leo addresses AI-driven #unemployment, the response is essentially: protect paid employment, hold the state responsible. Classical labour relations, updated for the AI age. Defensive, not visionary. 2/9

Francis went further in #LetUsDream. He broadened the concept of work to include care and voluntary contribution – and explicitly called for exploring UBI as a mechanism to guarantee dignity when employment can't. Leo XIV drops that thread entirely. 3/9

Which is a real gap. Because the encyclical's own theology insists human dignity is #unconditional – it precedes any economic contribution, any paid role, any productive output. That premise and that policy response don't quite meet. 4/9

But here is where it gets interesting. Leo XIV extends the "universal destination of goods" – the principle that the earth's resources belong to all humanity – explicitly to AI, algorithms, data, and digital platforms. That is a radical move. 5/9

AI is literally trained on all of us. If its output is a collective inheritance and not the private property of those who happened to build the last layer on top, then a share of that inheritance flows back to all. The encyclical's logic points exactly there. 7/9

Leo XIV doesn't draw that conclusion. But the theological groundwork is there: unconditional dignity, universal destination of goods, collective inheritance. The gap between premise and policy is precisely where advocates need to work. 8/9

If you agree that the people building #AI should stop saying UBI is a great idea and start actually backing it – there's a pledge for that. Drafted by an impressive circle, worth gaining some momentum: 👉 actionnetwork.org/petitions/the-ai-pledge-for-humanity #BasicIncome #FutureOfWork 9/9
