I read the article because I live next to Burlington (and thus am not surprised), but OMG what a horrible hit piece. Totally goes off the rails about social contagion, unnatural phenomena, etc. I seriously wonder whether it's worth citing even to dunk on it.

I should not have people trying to fix me and tell me the problem is my pride while they try to define me and force me to attend church. If they really believed in God, then why would He need their help? They claim to respect me while telling me that I don’t know what is good for me.
