That's because he lost his mind with the second question - lost track of what he was supposed to say and his mind wandered off into a field. The still aware part realized he couldn't keep going so he wrapped it up.

Wrapping up abruptly as soon as the questions stray off-script shows how tightly controlled these events have to be to avoid completely derailing.

He was still a narcissistic POS back in the 80's....but he had the ability to use his mind for his narcissistic tendencies. That is now gone as his mental capacity has declined. Not to say that means he was ever on the rails..but at least he was in the station.
