I was being facetious. The reason for not wanting a cat or any other pet is sometimes exactly as you suggest. I simply meant that their mind was changed and the "excuse or reason" fell away despite what they said because the cat had worked its way into their heart.:)

My dad's been very up-front that that's why he's previously been reluctant to get a pet: he can't handle the inevitable ending. Hasn't stopped him, of course.

When my mother walked out on us when I was 13, within 2 months my dad had let my sister and I adopt a cat. We hadn't been able to have pets till then because of her allergies. I haven't been without a cat since.

True story. The cat distribution center is powerful.

Yep, my dad said he "Hated cats" and I caught him several times talking to mine and petting him. 🙄😏
