Much of the coverage of the Clacton by-election has focused on Nigel Farage's self-serving and malign reasons for making this happen. But there is another part of the story that deserves attention: the severe deprivation experienced by some of the people living in the constituency.

A neighbourhood in Clacton constituency, the eastern part of Jaywick, was ranked the most deprived of all 33,755 neighbourhoods in England in 2025. It also ranked most deprived in 2019, 2015 and 2010.

More strikingly, it is one of only two neighbourhoods in the whole of England that fall within the most deprived 10% on every one of the seven IMD domains: income; employment; education, skills and training; health and disability; crime; barriers to housing and services; and living environment.

So this by-election not only exposes the political tricks Farage is playing for his own benefit, but also highlights how people in some of the most deprived areas are being used for political gain. It is sad, utterly objectionable and reprehensible - but most of all, it is undeniably unpatriotic.
