They're not "losing money" that's not what is happening here (and in basically every big corporation these days). They are "making less completely obscene profits, slightly less money hand over fist" than in the years before, Especially during a period which saw millions of people staying home.

The really unfortunate part I suppose is they'll probably still keep paying $$$ to give away dozens of free games on the EGS. Me personally as someone who will keep collecting the games while never spending a dime on the EGS, I'd rather forgo those treats if it means those devs can keep working!

If a corp posts a single cent positive for a tax report, forbid that corp from any layoffs over X percent vs total employee size, for one year. The next year the same. Need money? Cut the top where failure is created. You can still fire people for being not great but not without consequence.

So the legal formula would something like: Si  =  B0  +  γ⋅(ΔPN+ε⋅1P0)3⋅1(wi+δ)α∑j=1N1(wj+δ)α  If corp makes X of $$$, and lays off employees, they get significant severance payout, encouraging the largest salary, eg the ceo, the board, etc to be very careful and not treat people like cattle

For example: Examples laid‑off salaries: $300,000 through $25,000. The lowest salary ($25k) receives the largest share of the $10M punitive pool, the highest salary ($300k) receives the smallest share. Each employee’s severance = $10,000 + their share of $10,000,000 (profit example).

The result: lower‑paid employees get much larger severance payments, making firing them extremely costly and thus shifting the company’s incentive toward laying off higher‑paid staff first. Of course, they could avoid this by paying staff more generally or not firing them for shareholders.
