A good list to follow. And I want to emphasize a phrase in the description: “JOIN THE CONVERSATION.” Too often, social media photo posting brings “likes” but little conversation. But many of us welcome discussion of our photographs and related subjects. When you ”join in” you add value, too.

I am excited to share my new curated list and starter pack of inspiring nature photographers currently active on Bluesky: go.bsky.app/N37oYKG I hope you enjoy! #100%human #bluesky #photography #starterpack #nature #naturephotography #landscape #landscapephotography

I would love to see this group help the photography community here move away from worthless hashtags and towards actual conversation. Imagine putting all that blue garbage in a print publication or on a name card in a gallery. It’s the opposite of art.

1/x Most of us are fans of seeing our work in print and printed. :-) Conversation is a great thing, and many of us welcome it — or engage in it elsewhere and/or write on photographic subjects. That’s somewhat limited on social media in general and specifically on Bluesky for two reasons: 1. The…

2/. …character limit for posts makes it difficult to dig too deeply into subjects. 2. Lots of people simply don’t read multi-post threads and even fewer click through to online articles we share. OK, 3: You also can’t form “groups” in the same way we could on Facebook, which I left behind…

3/x … and don’t plan to return to, given my feelings about Meta. As for hashtags, they do serve a useful purpose for people who are looking for specific topics. For example, it would be very hard to efficient find, say, landscape photographs or fellow photographers without them. I think that the…

4/x best way to make Bluesky is to do things here that everage the connectivity it provides. It isn’t the be all, end all of online or other conversation, but it has a place. (This post is an experiment in what you ask for — more online conversation. We’ll find out, won’t we? :-)

Here I disagree The only people aggressively using hashtags are photographers Journalists, politicians, scientists all connect to their communities here without them. Just look at your feed Hashtags are a trained behaviour. Trained by X/Insta. And most add them without ever using them to search

This annoys me too about @bsky.app -- I understand limitations have their benefits, but I often have to repeatedly prune what I write (incl. this post via occasional awkward abbreviations I'd never otherwise use). Not sure how to ideally solve it, but +50% to the limit would be nice in the meantime.

Yeah, the character limit is honestly a real barrier for my engagement on bsky. Utterly arbitrary, it just puts speed bumps into the process of writing a serious thought or sharing an intelligent quote.

I'm with you on this. I prefer the model where the _displayed_ character limit may be short but then there's a "continue reading" link to the whole thing. What I really prefer is the "old days" when people would click through to read longer material on a web site and then engage.
