I have now read this article, which I was pleased to be interviewed for, and am actually quite dismayed at the both-sidesing of the issue at hand. It is true that “both Dems and Reps gerrymander“ (paraphrasing) but to equivocate the 2 and make that the central framing in 2026 does a real disservice

Articles like this miss the larger point of motivation. Republicans are gerrymandering *against* democracy, against being accountable to voters. Democrats are (largely) counter-gerrymandering to protect democracy. Of course they're also self-interested...but I'm not so cynical to imagine that

the stakes aren't quite visible to Democrats. Republicans clearly want to make elections entirely gestural, and the Democrats into a permanent Washington Generals.

The way California carefully structured its redistricting, making it obvious that it was entirely in response to Republican gerrymandering and dependent upon it, ought to make this clear.

Yes. When people come at me with both sides gerrymander, both sides lie, or both sides are corrupt, I tell them: "A 3.2 and a 7.8 are not the same just because they're both earthquakes." Scale and scope matter, and one side is orders of magnitude worse.
