Melania Trump brokered a peace deal? Did she graduate from the George Santos School of Diplomacy? Next you're gonna tell me her movie will win best picture at the Oscars.

I don't know (re the headline question)...but I do know that a reporter at this point imagining that anything Trump does could possibly be a "carefully thought-out strategy" (par. 6). FFS Trump is INCAPABLE of "carefully thinking" about anydamnedthing. And probably has been all his life.

Friction is so important to creative work that people *add* friction to allow themselves to do it. Just one example: meter, in poetry. You create a framework that restricts you, that limits you, in order to give your thoughts a scaffold within which to build.

the idea phase is the easiest and least valuable part of professional creativity. read the first draft of the first Star Wars if you doubt me Great art is made in the grinding, often miserable collision between the ethereal substance of an idea and the mud and blood and friction of reality

Everything I have read or heard from this guy is dead-on. I really hope he wins. (Not my state - next door, more or less)

Abdul El-Sayed@abdulelsayed.bsky.social

This is Tommy. Tommy had a question about my allegiances. Listen to the end to hear about his.

Turns out, "Tommy" isn't just some guy in the crowd. "Tommy" is Republican operative Thomas Teepell. And the Right is, somehow, trying to spin this exchange as El Sayer *not* disavowing the Muslim Brotherhood. (He does, clearly, a few minutes in.)

Every Republican should be asked to "disavow" Christian nationalism, white supremacy, fascism...and the claim that Trump won in 2020. See if they're anywhere near as forthright as El Sayed.

It's sad. "The Beach Boys"(tm) are pulling a Mitch McConnell with Mike Love, dragging his near-corpse out on stage when he clearly has no idea what he's doing. Not even Mike Love deserves that.

Robert Reich recently wondered what it is about us that we allow people like Trump and Musk to have so much power. I think the answer is that "we" allow individual humans to accumulate such obscene amounts of money, which disconnects them from reality, almost as a necessity.

And that power and status allows them to game the system further in their favor, warping the very reality we experience in news and other media. We might not undergo conditioning like Alex in 'A Clockwork Orange'...but the effect is the same.

Yet another reason no one should EVER have that much money (and that campaign finance laws should be massively reformed).

Elon Musk is single-handedly funding the Ken Paxton campaign:

This is, I believe, what the young people these days call a "self-own."

Askme@askme99.bsky.social

You have to appreciate the fact that these idiots always make these comments and never realize the context and facts.

Heather Cox Richardson notes that "yesterday Elizabeth Findell, Mark Maremont, and Josh Dawsey of the Wall Street Journal reported that Paxton spent New Year’s Eve in 2024 in Dubai, partying with a woman who was not his wife, along with two fugitives from U.S. justice."

I mean, there must be some sort of slimeball competition here, right? Not ONLY cheating on his wife, but ALSO hanging out with fugitives. Did he kick a puppy on his way to the airport, too?

There's apparently some dispute around Katie Zacharia's referring to herself as a "lawyer," since the state bars of all 50 states have no record of anyone of that name passing the bar. It's quite simple: Katie Zacharia has a J.D. from George Santos University.

What a flaming, self-righteous, idiotic windbag. A debate is clearly a public forum. He's speaking in public. There is no question whatsoever of "consent" here. And if he genuinely believes that's what the law says, he needs to resign for incompetence.

Baltimore Banner@thebaltimorebanner.com

Republican Rep. Andy Harris incorrectly told a reporter they were breaking the law as the reporter and others recorded an exchange with him last night. Harris had just wrapped up a debate with Democratic challenger Dan Schwartz.

Citing sources properly is both more complex, and more important, than a lot of people realize. (I'm seriously thinking of writing a simplified summary of this article for distribution to my students: its full form is too much for a first-year college student.)

Alfie Kohn@alfiekohn.bsky.social

Fascinating account showing how a false claim can become widely accepted (and propagated by multiple independent sources) as a result of a common academic shortcut: citing a source you haven't actually read after seeing it cited by another source: journals.sagepub.com/doi/full/10....

Not that I'm worried about her candidacy, but local Republican Yasmine Outlaw is following the playbook in, once again, canceling a scheduled debate at the last minute.

I was going to write the candidate directly...but her website is SO amateurish, its main page has generic text about a publication, the kind of thing a website provider includes in a package as a sample. The campaign was too incompetent even to overwrite this text.

In this case, she offers absurd excuses about "security" in a public park, mistakes a UWM student organization for "UWM sponsor[ship]" (and misspells "alma matter"), and generally acts in a ridiculous, high-handed manner.

Elon Musk was violating his visa when he started his first business here and very likely obtained his U.S. citizenship through fraud. Where is that investigation?

HELL Kennedy@helenkennedy.com

Fox News is reporting this is a criminal investigation into the immigration paperwork filled out by Ilhan Omar’s late father when she was a child 40 years ago. I actually think this is so nakedly outrageous it will blow back on them. www.reuters.com/legal/govern...

There is no organic groundswell of right-wing opinion...what there is is far smaller than traffic would have you believe.

Gabriele Svelto@gabrielesvelto.mas.to.ap.brid.gy

I double-checked this on a couple of Xitter stat sites and it's true. Average views of the main AfD account dropped 90% and average engagement dropped by 60%. This is commercial social media for you: bots, damn bots and Russian bots.

If, however, you enjoy those same things...but are also a raving bigot, THAT is why I disrespect you. And I'd disrespect you if your interests and values were identical to my own. And since, by and large, the left does not actually lack respect for those interests, or for churchgoing, patriotism,

etc., then all the pearl-clutching "compromise" pundits need to STFU. We on the left can be wrong, of course. But we are rarely wrong BECAUSE of small-minded bigotry. * Of course the left is not immune from small-mindedness. But we don't have presidents and congresspeople and CEOs platforming such

If you think I disrespect you because you're a rural American who enjoys (to stereotype) hunting, fishing, and NASCAR...no: if you enjoy those things, and you also accept that people with different interests and values to yours have full rights to those things, then I do not disrespect. At all.

Not to mention that ICE's own guidance states that agents have a DUTY to get out of the way when that actually happens...not shoot the driver. Because, contrary to the idiocy of ICE agents, a car does not die and stop moving just because its driver does.

Julian Sanchez@normative.bsky.social

I can’t help but notice that ICE keeps claiming that people it shoots were trying to ram the agents with a car, and then video keeps proving that’s a lie.

one more time: that mainstream media continues to just report what this government says—when it is obvious to anyone sensible that most of what it says is sheer bullshit—is part of the problem. The headline should be: ICE Official Falsely Claims... etc.
